DIY Holiday Ornaments

I decided that it was time to have a Christmas tree in my studio again this year. It's been awhile and now that's it's up, I have been having loads of fun making ornaments for it. First up on my lists of ornaments are todays Holiday Project number 4. These ornaments are a great scrap and trim buster. They don't take much to make and as usual, I couldn't just make one. The tutorial is at the end of this post.

You might recognize Lil Okey from my PDF patterns. I spiffed her up for the holidays by adding a bow and a piece of felt holly. Make sure to add a ribbon hanging while your sewing her if she's going to be an ornament.

The next two ornaments I made are from my new line of boutique craft kits. When I originally designed these I didn't intend them to be tree ornaments, but I have to say they fit on the tree nicely. Above is Folksy Bird and below is Happy Camper.

I have a few more ornaments on the sewing table and I bet you see those in the next few days if you keep up with my blog.

Now here's how to make the round ornaments at the top.

You'll need:
5" x 10" of cotton quilting fabric
2" x 4" gray felt
3-4 trims 6" each
8" black ribbon for hanger

Instructions:

1. Cut out pieces according to the pattern sheet. You can find it and print it here. Start by arranging one of the trims across the center of the ornament. Sew in place. From there you can decide if you want trims on the top and bottom of the center trim as well as another one across the center. I ended up using four trims for each ornament.

2. Next, align the back side of the ornament to the front. You'll want to sew around it but leave approximately a 1.5" gap. This gap should be at the top of the ornament where the cap will eventually go. 

3. Clip the curves, turn right sides out and fill will fiberfill. I didn't stuff mine too much, just enough to give them shape.

4. Arrange the two felt caps so they cover the opening in the ornament. One of the pieces should be on the front of the ornament and one should be on the back. Pin them in place. Fold the black ribbon in half and slide between the two pieces of felt and pin to secure.

5. Top stitch around the outer edge of the felt to secure everything. You're finished!

Stacked Ornaments Project and Making A Simple Wire Loop

Here's the how to for these fun stacked ornaments a.k.a. whimsical icicles. This would be a fun project to make with the kids.

Supplies Needed:

An Assortment of Beads

20 Gauge Craft Wire

18 Gauge Craft Wire

Instructions:

1. Make a spiral at the end of the 20 gauge wire.

2. Start stacking beads from smallest to largest on the wire until you are happy with your ornament.

3. Make a simple wire loop (see below) just above the last bead. Trim any excess wire.

4. Using the 18 gauge craft wire make an ornament hook (see below).

You can pin it or print these tutorials for later reference.

Art Bead Scene Ornament Blog Hop

Hey, Hey,

Today is the hop ! For those of you who are just tuning in, Art Bead Scene has organized an ornament blog hop. Below you will find a list if links. Start at the top and start clicking, each link will take you to a handmade ornament made with art beads.

Here is my Poinsettia Ornament. You might recognize the poinsettia as one of my holiday pendants. It has a loop on each side for stringing. I took advantage of these loops for the arched hanger. I used 24 gauge red craft wire and some assorted red, white, and green beads. I started at one loop and twisted the wire to secure it. From there I started weaving, twisting, and adding beads. I used a couple of pieces of wire so I could get some cute spirals along the way. It was super easy. I think it would be just as cute at your desk or on your wall if you didn't feel like hanging it on a tree. You could make the arch a bit longer and hang it off a doorknob.

I added some poinsettia pendants to the Etsy shop this morning. I made sure to include all of the supplies for the ornament so it's a one stop shop. I even made the mini kits a special price for today...just in honor of the blog hop fun.

Ornaments Galore

Hello, Hello,

I just decorated my tree so I have ornaments on the brain. I decided to pull out as many ornaments photos I could. Next week the Art Bead Scene is hosting an ornaments blog hop. Stop by here on Thursday, December 7th for the scoop. It should be fun! I will have a new ornament to show you.

This week is craaaa-zeee. It's studio moving time. Which means that it's also house re-do time. Yesterday I started painting the studio. I forgot my camera so I will have to give you a sneak peek later. I have more additions to make to the walls in the next few days. But because we are moving out of the basement studio tomorrow night, that means we will once again have a rec room. We have plans to get a new floor, paint, build bookshelves, and more. Crazy amounts of things to do in such little time before the holidays. But, if you haven't figured this out bu now, we Heynen's are crazy like that.

Oh and I have jury duty all week! What timing, eh?

Ornament Extravanganza

Today's ornament was made with a heart embellishment. I wired a hook to the embellishment and then embellished my embellishment even more. I used some sticky back rhinestones to outline the heart for a little more sparkle.

Ornament Extravanganza

Peace...

Ornament Extravanganza

Hey, Hey, It's day three of my ornament extravaganza. Today's project is made with one of my snowmen pendants, a little wire, and some glass beads. I made a large wire loop and strung on my glass beads. Once they were strung I hung the snowman from the center and made a hook at the top for hanging. Ornament Extravanganza

Hi there, welcome to day two of my Ornament Extravaganza. Today's ornaments is a bit of a sewing project. I promise it was super easy, so even if you don't sew, you could handle this one. I began by taking two triangles of green felt and sewing them together with a bit of stuffing, a felt trunk, and ribbon. I threaded on a star bead and sewed on strands of size 6 seed beads for garland.

Ornament Extravanganza

Welcome to day one of my Ornament Extravaganza! Today, I decided to go with a simple ornament. These are my new Holiday Pendants, they make a great ornaments as well as a great pendant. I used a silver craft wire to make a "swirly thing" at one end. I threaded this through the pendant and bent the wire so it was standing straight up. I added a few beads and made another loose swirl at the top and voila, the ornament was finished.

Yeah! It's ornament Thursday! I love ornament Thursday.

I am really happy the way this ornament turned out. I bought some 2" wooden wheels at the craft store, got out my markers, beads, and nails and went to work. The first thing I did was pre-drill eight holes for the nails. I tried just hammering in the nails but these wood wheels were really dense, it might work on another type of wood but not for me on these. Okay, next I drew circles with markers, pretty easy right? Then I dug around and found some 2 inch finishing nails, they are nice because finishing nails are pretty skinny allowing most beads to slide on. I did put a dab of glue on the end of each nail before sliding it into the whole. I figure I am going to have this ornament for a long time and so I should make it sturdy. Last to make it a hanging ornament, I wrapped a piece of silver wire around the top of one of the nails and then made a hook on the other end. I want to make more. I think these would be too cute hung all together on a garland across the mantle.

Ornament Thursday

Yipee! It's ornament Thursday! Here is my ornament, "I love Snowmen". All it took was a little 18 gauge wire, some Czech Beads, and a couple ceramic Jangle beads, and voila I had made my ornament.
