Insect Tea Towels

I mentioned the Stetson Mansion Quilt Show in my last post about my Reversible Place Mat Tutorial.
Judy Hansen down at the Quilt Shop of Dealand puts on a HUGE quilt show every summer at the Stetson Mansion. It runs July 18th-30th this year. Every room is decorated in a theme and is filled with quilts and other sewn items. The kitchen is going to be filled with insect themed picnic items this year. She's got my BugaPalooza fabric in her shop and so she asked me to sew up some items. Tea towels were on my list.

These were super fun to sew up and I guarantee you'll be seeing more tea towels and tea towel tutorials in the future.

BugaPalooza Border Prints Found

Hello,

I have been getting lots of questions about where to find the Bugapalooza Border and Main Floral prints. I am sold out and it is sold out at the In The Beginning Fabrics warehouse. Picnic Blanket with BugaPalooza Fabric

It's finished! If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you've probably seen some glimpses at the Bugapalooza Picnic Blanket I have been working on. What's a picnic blanket? It's a quilt you take on picnics, or to the beach, but I know you already know that part. :)

Some folks like to use a waterproof backing, or a twill or canvas backing to make the blanket heavier. I decided to keep mine all cotton, but I choose a heavier and stiffer batting to help weigh it down a little more. Before you ask, I have no idea what kind of batting it was, it was in my studio from another project and it wasn't labeled, I just liked the weight and went with it.

Here's how I pieced the quilt top. I made this quilt half yard friendly. I used eight different half yard cuts of BugaPalooza fabric to cut the inner blocks. The inner blocks are 9" square and there are 36 of them sewn together, six rows of six.

The cream dot borders are 4.5" in width. To cut these the most efficient way I could, I cut a one yard piece of fabric in to 1/8 yards strips and then sewed two strips together. The seam of the strip lines up with the middle seam of the 36 blocks.

Then that nice big border(almost 10" wide) was added to all sides. It took me 2.5 yards of border fabric. There are four borders to one width of fabric. Two opposite sides were sewn on and trimmed and then the two remaining border pieces were sewn on. My quilt top was finished, it went together super fast.

For quilting I went with my favorite superior thread. King Tut #934 Nile Delta It's yellows and lime green. It blends nicely with all of the colors, I used it on a lot of my quilts.

I did a little meandering through the center and then did some free motion scallops to mimic the scallops on the fabric border. When it came to quilting the border, I loosely went around the flowers and insects.

Last was sewing on the binding. It's Memorial Day weekend, so I will definitely be putting this picnic blanket to use!

Embroidery

Hey, Hey! I was taking lots of photos yesterday and thought I would snap a few of my latest project. Embroidery has been my new nightly project. I like to have a sit around project for the evenings or when I am waiting to pick a kid up from some activity, you know, something portable.

I decided to use some of my drawings from my new line of Bugapalooza fabric to play around with. I don't have an end project in mind. I might sew it in to a project or I might leave it in the hoop, haven't decided that one yet.

To transfer the design to my fabric, I used my new Friction pens that I got from my son for Christmas, thanks Fletch! They are super cool, made by pilot, and can be found in office stores. They erase with heat. I do notice a bit f a white line left after ironing but with the embroidery covering the lines up anyway, I think they are perfect for this. If you are curious, I posted a little video on instagram of the pen in action.

Once I figure out what I'm making, I'll be sure to post some photos.

Bugapalooza Strike Offs

Look what just arrived in the mail.... Bugapalooza strike offs. Whats a strike off, you ask? Well in the fabric printing world, the mill takes the design files that we (In The Beginning Fabrics and I)  send the mill. The mill does a first round of printing the designs on fabric. They screen print small pieces of the design and these are to make sure the colors are correct.

Think about if the mill just printed thousands and thousands of yards and it was the wrong color, yikes! Strike offs are usually sent once, notes are made about color changes and sent back. Then a second round of strike offs are sent. Usually that's all that needs to be done, every now and then a third round is required.

These strike offs are for my Bugapalooza fabric line that is arriving in stores in April. This is the first round of strike offs and they turned out really great. Every single one needs to be examined for printing flaws and color changes. 

Over the next few weeks, I will start planning out what patterns and projects I want to sew with these prints. This gives me a head start so when the yardage arrives I am ready and don't have to think about a thing and I can begin sewing.

 In the meantime, I will start sewing some smaller projects with these, because seriously, receiving strike offs is like being a kid on Christmas morning.

Fall Quilt Market 2014 Sneak Peek #1 Bugapalooza and Jolly Holiday in the City

Hello Hello, Quilt Market is starting on Saturday! I am scurrying around the studio trying to get things finished up and ready for market. Yes, I will most likely be sewing on the airplane, I still have that much to do. I am super excited about some new things I will be debuting at market and so I thought I would give you a little glimpse at new things to come.

First up....New Fabric! I will have two new lines of fabric debuting at market. If you're a quilt shop or you want a quilt shop to get this fabric, now is the time to call up In The Beginning Fabrics and get your order in. If you are a sewer or quilter who is going to want some of this fabric, now is the time to ask your favorite quilt shop to order it.

 Bugapalooza will be in stores and ready to be sewn with in April. I've always been a big fan of bugs and for a long time were the main focus of my tiles and other art. So designing a line of fabrics with bugs and flowers was so much fun. There are several color ways and 28 fabrics in all. Here are a few...it's a sneak peek remember?

The second line at market is Jolly Holiday in the City. It will be hitting stores in June. I have brought back my snowmen from Jolly Holiday, my first round of holiday fabric. This time the jolly little snowmen and snow women are ice skating and having fun in the city. There are 25 fabrics in this line.

It's back to Quilt Market prep for me!
