DIY Heart Pin Cushion

Heart Pincushion

It’s been awhile since we’ve had a new pincushion pattern here at Jennifer Jangles. I love big and stable pincushions that can hold a lot of pins. This heart cushion will give you lots of space for pins. I added a pom pom trim around the bottom, but as I was making it I was thinking of other options for trims as well. Tulle along the bottom would be cute, a smaller trim at the top could add some color, you get the idea.

This isn’t in the instructions, but in all of my pin cushions, I sew a small pillow to fill with sand and insert into the base of the cushion. This helps add additional weight to keep the cushion stable.

Supplies:

1/4 yard or fat quarter heart fabric

5/8 yard pom pom trim

Fiberfill

Button

Felt scrap

Doll makers needle

Cut 1 strip measuring 16.25” x  2.5” and print this pattern piece.

Instructions:

1. Sew the two shorter sides of the pin cushion  band together.

2. Starting with the seam of the band lined up with the point of the heart, pin of side of the band all of the way around the heart.  Note: add trim between the two layers of doing so.

3. Using 1/4” seam allowance, sew around the pinned edge.

4. Repeat step 2. on the second side of the band and the second heart. This time leave a section open for turning.

5. Clip the curves and turn right sides out. If you’ve chosen to sew a weighted pillow, slide it inside the pin cushion. Fill the pin cushion with fiberfill. Heres a video on stuffing objects with fiberfill, to get it looking good. Hand stitch the opening closed.

6. Place the button on top of the felt and cut a circle out, bigger than the button.  Sew the button and felt onto the cushion using a long doll makers needle. Using this needle, go all of the way through the cushion and back through the top to secure.

Deco Foil Zipper Pouches

Little Love Bunny Softie Sewing Pattern

Alrighty, here is the first of what I promise to be many new sewing patterns this year. Right now Little Love Bunny is available as a PDF but he'll be in print down the road....just have to get a few more ready for the printer first so I can send them all off at once.

Little Love Bunny makes a cute little gift for Valentines Day or any day.

For some reason I couldn't sew just one, I made nine. They were super fun to sew, and quick, and I'm probably weird but when I sew I like to sew a lot of things all at once. I must have an inner production worker needing to get out.

He's got lop-sided ears and a off center nose to give him character. I was picturing a child's drawing when I designed him. His eyes are 1/4" buttons but could easily be stitched on with floss for a younger child.

Sew a Tic Tac Toe Game

This fun project is already in use at our house. It's on the coffee table and a quick game of tic tac toe can be played at any minute.

Here's how to sew this one up just in time for a Valentines gift for your sweetie.

First, I made the game board and to do this, I basically made a mini quilt. Sew up a nine patch quilt block using 3 1/2" squares. Make a quilt sandwich with batting and backing and quilt it.

I chose to quilt mine in a sort of a "off to the sides back and forth stitch in the ditch" method. I'm not one for straight lines but I wanted to keep it looking like a tic tac toe board.

Add some binding and you're finished with the board.

You need five of each game piece to make sure you have enough if there isn't a winner right away. You can find printable pattern pieces here for the heart and circle. I even included a 3 1/2" block just in case you're new to quilting and don't have a ruler.

Cut five sets of hearts and five sets of circles. Sew around the outside using a 1/4" seam. The bags can be filled with fiberfill or sand. I chose to use sand to have some weight.

I keep a bag of sand in my studio with a little funnel for projects just like these.

Once they are filled up hand stitch the opening closed. Don't be tempted to do this on your machine, sand will fall out and it won't be good for it. I stitched around the bag a second time as well.

 Add a button to the center of the circles and you are ready to play!

Love Note Valentine Project

Hello, Valentines Day is just around the corner. I made up this little heart door hanger. It's got a pocket for you to tuck a love note to someone special.

Here's what you will need to get started;

1/4 yard heart fabric
3" x 6" pocket fabric
Assorted Trims
Tulle
Fabric and Felt scraps
Heat n Bond Fusible Spray
Fiberfill

Instructions:
1. First using the pattern here, cut out two hearts from the fabric and set aside.
2. Cut 2 squares of fabric measuring  2.75" x 3". These will be your pocket. Turn 1/4" down at the top of each piece, press and sew to hold.
3. Place right sides together and sew the three remaining sides together. Clip the corners, turn right side out, and press.

4. On one of of the heart pieces, arrange the pocket in the top left hand corner. Choose your trims for embellishing and cut to desired size for the heart.

5. Sew the trims and the pocket onto the heart. I like to hold my trims in place with Thermo-webs fusible adhesive. I spray the back of any of the flat trims and press them in place. They are held securely while I sew. I use this spray on my Happy Scrappy Scarf Trims as well.

6. Next, cut trims for the hanger measuring approximately 12" in length. Pin the ends to the top of the heart. 

7. Gather the tulle and pin it around the edges of the heart and pin into place. At this point it should look like the image below. I cut my tulles width to 3" wide for pinning. Once the heart was filled and sewn shut, I went back around with scissors and trimmed it to the desired length. 

8. Pin the second side of the heart to this heart making sure right sides are together. Leave a gap for turning and stuffing towards one of the bottom sides.

9. Sew around the heart, clip the curves up to the seam and turn right sides out.

10. Fill with fiberfill and hand sew opening closed.

11. I made my flower embellishment with a yo yo, some felt and a button. You can find the flower and leave pieces on the pattern piece printout if you would like to do the same. Sew the embellishment onto the heart and you are finished.

12. Fill out your love note and slip it into the pocket. If you want the same note paper as I used, you'll find a printable one on the pattern piece page as well.

Hearts Have Arrived

They are up! I just listed a bunch of new hearts up in my Etsy shop. I am super excited about them. I have a lot of red and pink, but I couldn't resist making some bright colors. I'm Seeing Red

I'm Seeing red, and pink, and white. Yep, it's getting to be that time. Have you been shopping lately? It's everywhere, and I am having to hold myself back from buying chocolate. It's only going to get worse because Easter will be next and then they have Cadbury eggs and malted milk balls. Oh, there goes the diet.

But back to Valentine's day...My website is chocked full of Hearts and more. I thought I would get some links up so you can see it all in one place.
