Been Sewing

 Morning....
I have found myself at the sewing machine lately... a lot. I showed you my bib tutorial a few days ago. While I was sewing it for my baby shower gift, I made some burp cloths as well. The reverse side has a cloth diaper. In a nut shell you sew the two pieces of cloth together with right sides facing. Turn, sew up the turn opening, and quilt a few straight lines on top. Easy Peasy Lemon Squeezy!

I did a little stamped tag too, before wrapping.
We also had a dinner party this past weekend and I wanted to bring a hostess gift. I have found my latest obsession. Mug Rugs... oh so much fun to make. These are my first two that I made. I have two more sitting on my desk just waiting for the binding to be sewn on. Hopefully I will get to that this evening.
If I have you wondering about mug rugs here's the place to go. Be warned, they are addictive. I think there are going to be a lot of mug rug Christmas gifts in my house.
Let me know in the comments if you have made mug rugs. Give me a link to your photos of them, I would to take a peek.

Have a great day!

Ruffled Baby Bib Tutorial

Hello, Hello,

I got to go to a baby shower this past weekend. I knew that our friends, Amber and Ryan were having a girl. I was so excited! I have two boys and here was my chance to make something with ruffles. I came up with this bib pattern and wanted to share it with you. The three pattern pieces can be found here, here, and here for printing. Tape them together if you want to make the one ruffle bib. This pattern can be shrunk or enlarged to suit the size you need.

Here's the fabric you will need to cut....

One Ruffle Bib(black)
2 full bib pieces for front and back (tape the three pieces together to make one bib)
1 full bib piece from fleece
2.5" x 44" fabric strip for ruffle
piece of hook and loop tape

Three Ruffle Bib
1 piece of fabric cut for each of the 3 bib pieces
1 full bib piece for bib backing (tape the three pieces together to make one bib)
1 full bib piece for bib back
2.5" x 44" fabric strip for ruffle
Two pieces of 2.5" x 22" fabric strips for ruffle
piece of hook and loop tape

Just in case you're wondering, all of the fabrics I used here come from my Polka Dot Garden Collection of fabric.

After cutting out all of the pieces out, fold the ruffle pieces in half with the right sides facing outward.
With your machine or by hand run a gathering stitch along the raw edge of the fabric strip. Do this for all of the ruffle strips you will need for your bib.

Pull one of the threads of your gathering stitch to gather the ruffle or ruffles.

If you are making the Three Ruffle Bib, Start by pinning one of the short ruffle sections across the top of the second bib piece. Pin the ruffle so the raw edges hang over the side of the bib piece. It will eventually get sewn over with another ruffle. The second short ruffle section will get pinned across the top of the third bib piece.

Before sewing the ruffles, pin the bottom of bib piece one to the top of bib piece two. Sew together.

Pin the bottom of the second bib piece to the top of the third bib piece and sew together.

If you're making the One Ruffle Bib this is where you jump in. Both bibs have the outer ruffle. This ruffle will vary in length because of the gathering. Th make sue the ruffle is center fold it in half to find the center. Pin the center of the ruffle to the center of the bottom of the bib. Continue to pin up each side. Turn the raw edges of the ruffles into the fold of the ruffle before pinning.

You bib should look like either the picture above or the picture below depending which bib you are sewing.
Next place the right side of the bib backing facing the right side of the bib front. Place the fleece on top of the back of the bib back. Pin all of the layers together. Sew these layers together leaving a 4 inch opening towards the top for turning. Clip the round edges up to the thread, taking care not to cut the seam. Turn and press.

*Note* Because seam allowance, ruffles, etc, vary, when pinning the Three Ruffle Bib start at the neck and work your way down the sides pinning the layers. Smooth as you go and you might find there is a bit of extra fabric left at the bottom of the bib back. After sewing the three layers together trim the excess away.

Hand sew the turning hole closed. Top stitch around the edges.

Sew a piece of hook and loop tape at the top of the bib for opening and closing. Trim and loose threads.

I hope you enjoyed my Ruffled Bib Tutorial, thanks for stopping by the blog and I hope you stop back by again soon.

Have a great day!

My Bead Soup has Arrived!

Oh look what I got in the mail yesterday! EEk these are beautiful glass beads made by Jenni Connolly.

First of all I opened my envelope that came all of the way from Australia and I found this beautiful box with a tied ribbon and nice ribbon note.

Already I am impressed and excited. Inside were these glass beads. I am in love with the glow of these fuchsia and purple beads.

Jenni was also so sweet and a beautiful toggle, silver beads, and stones from Australia. Very pretty. I am going to have to make Jenni proud....my brain is reeling with design ideas. I am going to have to carve out a space on my work table so I can lay out my beads and walk by. I am going to let this design stew for a bit. Whoa....I said stew and it's a bead soup! funny or maybe I just think it's funny...Here's a link where you can find links from everyone who is participating in the Bead Soup Blog Party. September 17th is the official date for the hop. That is when everyone will reveal their designs using the bead soup they received from their partner. It's going to be fun!

Thanks Jenni for such great beads!

Stuff, Lot's of It

Hey, Hey, Happy Tuesday!

Check it out! Snowmen and Christmas trees! Eeek! You all know it's my favorite time of the year. I love the Holidays! It may seem a bit early but every August I start working on my holiday projects, new beads, and gifts. I just pulled some other, brand new, Christmas beads out of the kiln that are so dang cute! But unfortunately I cannot show you yet. Yep top secret until the first holiday newsletter. I think it's October 6th if I remember correctly.

This post has so much random stuff, hence the title. Check out this caterpillar Nik found last night in the woods in our yard. I had to look it up, it looks super scary. It's a Hickory Horned Devil Caterpillar. I guess it's rare to find one this color, who knew? It turns out this guys is perfectly harmless but there are other caterpillars that bite ans sting. I did not know that either. I should have listen to more of my moms "nature talks" when I was a child. She was a science teacher and loved to teach and being the rotten(or typical) children my brother and I were, we would roll our eyes and mock her when we would try to teach us something. My poor mother...

Okay, back to pottery... pretty mugs just out of the kiln....

And last but not least. Pottery to paint! I am sure I mentioned that we are having classes starting in a few weeks. A few nights we are going to be open for paint your own pottery night. You know, bring a group of girl friends or your date and come paint. I looooove to paint, it's my favorite thing ever! I wanted to share the fun with some of the local pottery or paint loving people.

To make a long story longer, a nice woman from dealmobs came to my studio a few weeks ago, (it's a really cool "groupon" site) and I signed up to have a discount for paint your own pottery night, you know, good advertisement, right? She gave me an estimate of how many people I would have buy the coupon and since I am totally new I wasn't even expecting that number. Well, it turns out in that one day I sold four times what she had estimated! Wahoo, that is exciting. I looove that so many people want to come and paint pottery. Of course that means a lot of last minute bisque ordering and class adding. I have the bisque as you can see above.... oh it makes me want to come site and paint all day. Open studios times have been added and we are going to add even more this week(check out Facebook for the latest). Whew! But oh so much fun!

Have a great day!

Pin Cushions and Embellishments

Hi there! I put a few new items on the website this summer and forgot to mention them. Boy, it was a busy summer! I always play catch-up in August and that's what I am doing now, catching you up on new work.

Remember when I returned from Spring Quilt Market? Yes...that was May....told you I'm playing catch up. I showed you this picture. Here is a pretty cake stand of pin cushion rings.

I love these! I have been making them for the past few years but it has taken me a long time to get them "right". I finally have them the quality and style I want as well as I have found the right components. These rings are adjustable so they fit anyone. The ball is wool so it keeps your pins and needles sharp as well. I wear one all the time when I sew. You should see mine, it's covered in pins, needles, thread....let's just say it is well loved.

It's funny how many folks have bought them just to wear as rings with no intentions of ever putting them to use. I love it!

So I know I have shown you this necklace before...

And this bag...

Where did I get all of those snazzy felts, beads, flosses, and velvets? From my embellishment kits. I found myself using the same supplies over and over again and decided I should kit them up. I don't know about you but I am a sucker for kits of fun stuff like this. In each pack you get an assortment of felt, tulle netting, floss, beads, trims, and my favorite, hand dyed velvets. Yep... I dyed those and I really wanted to keep them all for myself. Oh...I should mention each kit is a little different in color, even though they are all bright, how fun is that?

Alrighty... I am off to work on some blog tutorials today. I can't wait to share with you....

Have a great day,
Jennifer

I just snapped this photo and had to show you what I just unloaded from the kiln. Look at all those fall and Halloween beads. Fall is around the corner. I am just like those squirrels out gathering nuts right now preparing for whats around the corner. Oh, except that I am making beads to prepare not nuts, (don't want to confuse anyone :) )

You can bet on seeing some of these pretty things in the Etsy shop tomorrow.....

Have a good evening,
Jennifer

New Etsy Items

Good morning!

Finally, finally...new work in the Etsy shop. wahoo!

So we made it through the first day of school. Everyone was a little tired and grumpy last night.
But the boys were up early this morning and excited about going to school again, whew! Fletcher even set his own alarm fifteen minutes earlier than usual so he could get up and shower before us. It was great, but really, is that going to ever happen again? Probably not, I will enjoy it while I can.

I made all kinds of things yesterday in the studio. Believe it or not, I was working on Christmas! Yikes, those ten holiday projects start sooner than you can imagine so I am getting my plan together early this year. I am also working on having all of my web store items in stock and ready to ship. I am getting really close to having it all. I have only managed to do this twice in all of my years in business. I'm telling you this organization thing rocks.

Come back tomorrow and I'm going to have a sneak peek of the store, I am really happy with how it's coming together.

Have a great day,
Jennifer

School !?

Oh, my gosh, I can't believe my little munchkins went to school today! Man, summer went fast. This was my sixth, first day of school with my boys. I still get nervous for them, even though they couldn't have been more excited. I guess I need to chill out.

On the other hand, it's nice to know where they will be all day, every week. I started out this morning with that, "it's a new beginning" kind of feeling. I think I get more that way at this time of the year than at New Years. I'm headed into the studio today to make lots of new beads for they Etsy shop...can't wait. Falls beads, Halloween, oh my...

Talk to you soon,
Jennifer

Inside The Creative Studio

Oh I cannot wait for this book to come out! Look what Interweave is working on. I guess maybe it's because I am in the middle of my own studio organization that this would be perfect to curl up with right now.

My home studio did make it into the book. :) Seeing those pictures make me want to go clean up downstairs, it sure doesn't look like that today!

Have a great day,
